I fell in love with Artist Books when I started working for the Getty Research Library after college. In 1993, I took my first bookbinding class with Carolee Campbell (Ninja Press) at Otis School of the Arts. Since then I’ve taken classes at the Penland School of Arts and Crafts in North Carolina and the Paper and Book Intensive. Book binding introduced me to letterpress printing and, during a brief stint in San Francisco in the 90s, I took letterpress classes at the then newly opened San Francisco Center for the Book with Mary Laird. As soon as I had the space I bought the Chandler & Price pilot press and Showcard Signcard proof press that I still use today.
From 2009-2014, I taught bookbinding classes in Los Angeles at Jenny Ryan’s wonderful space Home Ec. in Silver Lake (sadly, now closed); Alphabet City in Auckland, New Zealand (also now closed); ReForm School in Los Angeles (Billie & Tootie are still open!), and my home studio in Koreatown.
At the end of 2014, I moved north to the Bay Area and a new job as Head of Preservation at Stanford University Libraries. I’ve set up a new little studio in Oakland where I plan to continue my own binding and printing projects and share them here.
